This gorgeous melody was written in 1915 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. It was the last in a series of fourteen song romances. Rachmaninoff’s ‘Vocalise” is often programmed on trumpet recitals. Early in my time at Indiana University, I was completely dumbfounded hearing Jim Reed perform this piece. Jim had recently returned from playing principal trumpet in the Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico in Toluca, Mexico. His sound, follow through and intensity were inspiring. This orchestration for chamber orchestra is my tribute to Jim, a fabulous musician and friend. To the best of my knowledge this is the only chamber orchestra arrangement, another skillful job by Tony Bonsera.
